Lucky Penny Cork Wallet

Projects made with cork have been popping up all over and I decided to give sewing with cork a try when I had the opportunity to take a class via Zoom with the Triangle MQG making a wallet. 

Having signed up for the class the day before, I ran out to my local quilt shop, Bernina We're in Stitches, and purchased the cork, zipper and thread I needed.  I decided to make a two-color wallet and found a dark brown in espresso and peony which had brown bits mixed in so I thought it coordinated well.  

Ahead of class time, Sara asked us to only cut out the pattern pieces as she had some fabric saving tips for cutting the cork.  

I'm happy to say that I made the wallet in two hours flat from start to finish.  And, that included adding a zipper to one of the pockets that is not in the original instructions for the Lucky Penny Wallet pattern by Sallie Tomato.  This is the only in-process photo I took during class.

Here's a close up of the zipper pocket after completion.   I opted to add more card pockets in the center section rather than a single ID pocket as the original pattern called for.

Since I used the dark brown espresso cork for the outside of the wallet, I cut the strap out from the hot pink peony cork.  

The cork was surprisingly very easy to handle from the cutting to the sewing.  The most tedious part to the construction was final sewing of the inner and outer panels together but Clover clips helped hold the panels together.  

Now, my only dilemma is whether to keep if for myself or gift it!
