Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop + Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts Blog Hop.  The kick off post is here.  Briefly,  we will be sharing 2 quilts from the book each weekday until all 16 quilts are featured and 40+ bloggers will share their version they have made on their respective blogs.  You are in store for a treat!  And, there will be giveaways each day!

Let's get started with Day 2...

Tribal Plus

First up is Tribal Plus which features rows of nested plus signs and was quilted using the walking foot  to emphasize the plus signs.  I used matching Aurifil thread in 50 wt which is the weight I use most often for piecing and quilting.
Tribal Plus is made from fabrics all by Windham Fabrics and includes two Artisans Cottons and two prints.  I particularly liked using a wide backing in Newsprint by Carrie Bloomston which is available at Backside Fabrics.

Head on over to see more versions of Tribal Plus made by Sophie, Afton and Shelly.

Signature Plus

I'm sure many of you you have seen Red Cross quilts of war times, such as this one, circa 1915, in the possession of the Lake County Discovery Museum in Lake County, Illinois.  Residents paid 10 cents to have their name embroidered on the quilt square.

For Signature Plus,  Cheryl designed this quilt using two different size plus signs and 122 quilters from all over made plus blocks using Cotton Couture in Cherry and White furnished by Michael Miller Fabrics.
Signature Plus was quilted by Johellen George of Cabin Quilt Studio in an allover leafy design.  Here's the detail of a large plus block made by a fellow UpCountry Quilters guild member.

You are going to love the versions made by Soma, Ann and Kitty!

  4. I just love the Red Cross inspired signature quilt, Paige! And how fun to see so many interpretations of these two patterns. Such a great idea to let us see how versatile your book is :)

Have you tried using Aurifil's 40 weight for quilting? I love how the thicker thread shows the quilting so well, but struggle with it shredding in my needle. Just wondering if you've experienced that.

  9. I just love old vintage quilt patterns made new! Love the shot of an actual one from 1915, and then that you had 122 of today's quilters contribute and sign the ones for this quilt! Great backing choice too Paige. :-)
