October One Monthly Goal ~ Celebration Challenge

This year my local quilt guild is celebrating its 25th anniversary and at the September meeting we had a reception including cake and punch.  I thought Publix did a great job on decorating the cake including the writing for our silver anniversary.

We always issue a challenge in conjunction with our biennial quilt show which is coming up in November.  Our challenges are usually focused around a fabric chosen as the challenge fabric and a theme which is CELEBRATION this year!

The challenge fabric is the main focus print (style 4590B) from the Starburst collection by Michele D'Amore Designs for Benartex.

This has been a real challenge as the print is fairly large scale and there are only two of the medallions that are whole or complete.  Most of them are overlapping which definitely makes this a challenge.  The repeat is every 24".

So what am I going to do with this fabric?  I have ideas, but I can't share them right now as our finished quilts must be delivered covered and the members will vote blindly on them at the October 24th meeting.

Your quilt can be any style and use any technique(s), but there are a few rules...

  • The challenge entry must depict the theme, Celebration, and include 'silver' somewhere in your quilt in honor of the guild's 25th anniversary.  The 'silver' could be beads, buttons, crystals, trims or fabric with silver metallic.  (Updated 10/8)
  • The challenge design must contain a significant amount of the challenge fabric (not just in the border).
  • Size: 35" x 35", a 1" variance is acceptable.
  • Hanging sleeve and label required.

I thought this would be the perfect goal since I need this completed by the 24th so I am linking to October 2017 One Monthly Goal with Patty at Elm Street Quilts.

  1. Stunning icing and decorations. Are the motifs able to be cut apart, and use one colour of them? I can see this might be something that gets a lot of deliberation!consideration!! and contemplation !!!. Good luck with your own design.

  5. Beautiful fabric! Can't wait to see what you've cooked up, Paige! It definitely does make it challenging when those medallions overlap so much but I have confidence you have a great idea.

  6. Yes challenge fabrics are usually a challenge. I know you will be up to it though because you always come up with something creative and perfect for the theme.

  7. Good for you to have a challenge idea already. That's always the biggest hurdle. I'm working on a challenge quilt now too. The part I dislike the most is not being able to share it as I go. Feedback would be nice! Happy for your traditional guild to have such longevity. My Iowa guild - Des Moines Area Quilters Guild - is like that, though I think they're up to 30-plus years. I sure miss those quilters!
