Throwback Thursday #6: Frames

Where did the week go?  It's the first Thursday of the month and time for Throwback Thursday!

I'm sharing a quilt I made in February 2012 for the arrival of the first grandchild in my husband's family.

Frames baby quilt by Paige Alexander

The pattern is called Frames by Elizabeth Hartman and came as a trio of patterns, More Simple Modern Baby Quilts published in 2010.

The original block size was 8" and I enlarged them to 9".  I included a column of blocks on the back so I could still get the backing from from length of fabric.

The main fabric was Zoology in Sea by Michael Miller.  I fussy cut the elephants, hippos, giraffes, frogs and trees for the center of the blocks. Every other block was framed in the same fabric, Scatter Square in Beige from the Mini Mikes collection also by Michael Miller.

The rest of the blocks were made from coordinating fabrics in gray, beige and aqua.

I printed the label and incorporated it into one of the blocks on the back. No hand sewing on a label, Yay!

I quilted it in an all over stipple design and pieced some random scraps together to practice the scale first and check the thread color.  I know it's a gray by Auriful.  This is the practice piece I still have.

From the leftovers I'm making another baby quilt.  The shower is Saturday and still need to sew on the binding.  I better get busy!

  1. Hi Paige,
You certainly do come with some modern color schemes! And some super cute quilts, I might add! This quilt matches the colors on your blog page. :)

  2. I really like how you included some of the blocks on the back. Just the right spot for the label too! The same borders of all the fussy cut blocks really tie the whole thing together. Great job!

  3. It's lovely both front and back! The Zoology fabric is way too cute and the label idea is way too clever (so maybe I'll have to steal it ;)))

  4. This is a lovely baby quilt Paige. I remember this fabric. It works really well in the fussy cut blocks and looks great on the back as well.

  5. Lovely, and I love the inclusion of blocks in the backing. I used that Zoology print for a quilt I made my first niece in 2013. :)

  6. I love the cohesiveness of this quilt from the fussy cut centers to the colors to the repetition of the block motif on the back. It just gives off a wonderful cozy vibe. How fun that you had enough fabric left to make another.

  8. That quilt is darling. I really like how you made it look so together with your fabric choices. I tend to make my small quilts no larger than 1 width of fabric. I may borrow your idea next time I have a bigger quilt.

  9. Love the fabrics in this quilt Paige. Thanks for clearing up the relationship name for siblings grandchildren. My sister became a grandmother last year and no-one seemed to certain what the relationship was. Great Aunt brings up images of ancient spinsters in my mind, kind of like Miss Haversham or something.

  14. I love that feature fabric! I have scraps of it in two different colour pathways. And there are bits of those animals in DT's I Spy Polaroid quilt. Thanks for linking up with Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge!
